A patron's love letter to the village her family founded.
My name is Sample Author. I was born in Heritage, a village my own ancestors built on a green plain three kilometres from the line that now divides India and Pakistan. I left as a teenager. I never stopped belonging to it.
Around the year 1740, two Author brothers, Gaur Singh and Kaur Singh, walked north from Ludhiana, took the Khande De Pahul at the Akal Takhat in Amritsar, and at the suggestion of an ascetic named Mool Dass, raised a village on a quiet mound in the Majha. They called it Heritage. The village has carried the Author name for nearly three centuries. I carry it still.
For decades I have lived in Seattle, half a world from the dust on the road to my grandmother's house. But the road never left me. Every season, every harvest, every face I cannot forget walks back to me from a place I now visit only in memory and in love.
This site is a small thing for so vast a feeling. It is a record of a village. It is a promise that as long as I am able, the place my forebears built will not be forgotten by anyone who comes here looking for it. I am not a foundation. I am not a charity. I am one daughter of the Author line, choosing to be the patron her village deserves, alone if she has to be.
